Secondary school graduation: Criticisms trail lawmaker’s car gift to daughter

By Laraba MUREY

A member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State, Yusuf Gagdi, car gift to his daughter, Aisha, of a new Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle has continued to elicit widespread criticisms from Nigerians.

Hon. Gagdi gifted his daughter on her graduation from a secondary school, Lead British International School, Abuja.

Taking to Instagram on Saturday, Gagdi wrote, “Today, I attended my amazing daughter’s graduation ceremony. Watching you, my dear daughter, walk across that stage fills my heart with immense pride and love.

“I celebrate your achievements and the strength you’ve shown. Here’s to a future filled with endless possibilities and happiness. Congratulations, my shining star!”

However, some Nigerians have reacted negatively to the gift especially at a time of economic meltdown for many a home in the country.

Nweze Jude Davincee on the microblogging site, Facebook, wrote, “If his own father gave him a car after his WAEC would he get to this level? He is doing constituency project for his daughter, lol.”

Usman Abdullahi Mohammed was full of sarcasm in his take on the matter as he wrote, “When she finishes university na aeroplane he go buy for her!”

For Ayinde Soji, it is because the common man will be unable to react. He wrote, “They are doing it to tell us that we cannot do anything.”

Also, Nojeemdeen Ademola Ajetunmobi believes it boils down to the jumbo pay of lawmakers. He stated, “what do except when they are collecting jumbo pay?”

Adam Abu sees nothing wrong with the gift, rather the timing. “Wrong timing. Not when the masses want to protest for hardship. (sic) Though, Gagdi is a good man but the gift could have come later than now.”

Jafar Gambo doesn’t believe anything is wrong with the gift, as according to him, “Nothing is wrong, he is our dependable choice. He has done more than that for his constituency.”
