Why Spain is committed to Nigeria’s democracy – Envoy

By Laraba MUREY

The Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria, Juan Sell, has reaffirmed Spain’s strong support for Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Speaking during Spain’s National Day celebration in Abuja, the envoy commended Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy and praised the country’s efforts to build a system that delivers for its citizens.

“Spain is committed to Nigeria’s democratic progress, and we fully support the necessary reforms to ensure a democracy that truly delivers for all,” the ambassador stated.

He added that Nigeria’s transformation is essential not only for its own citizens but also for the African continent.

“As the Vice-President of the World Bank said, ‘Africa goes as Nigeria goes.’ This gives Nigeria a responsibility to lead by example.”

Sell also highlighted Nigeria’s resilience in the face of challenges, expressing optimism about the country’s future. “Nigeria is a resourceful and resilient nation, and I believe that the ‘peace and plenty’ we all desire will soon be realized.”

He further emphasized the significance of Nigeria’s partnerships, particularly with Spain and Europe.

“We are not walking this journey alone. Spain, as part of Team Europe, remains fully committed to supporting Nigeria’s development through every investment, cultural exchange, and cooperation we foster,” Sell said.

On regional security and stability, the Ambassador expressed Spain’s full backing for the efforts of ECOWAS.

“We stand with ECOWAS in its determination to protect democracy across West Africa. The region must remain united, putting the interests of their peoples first,” he affirmed.

“Every new partnership, every joint venture, and every cultural exchange strengthens the bond between our nations,” Sell noted.

The event, attended by key government officials, business leaders, and ECOWAS representatives, aimed to enhance robust ties between Spain and Nigeria.
