How CNG powered-truck claimed several lives in Abuja road accident

Reports from the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, indicate that the Wednesday night ghastly motor accident at the Karu bridge, along Keffi express road in Abuja, was caused by a Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, powered by trailer.

The Abuja Inquirer on Wednesday, reported that six persons had lost their lives when a truck lost control on the Karu bridge between Kugbo and Nyanya stretch of the road, and ramped into several vehicles on its path.

The impact was said to have caused an explosion that engulfed over fourteen vehicles caught in a traffic gridlock on the road.

Preliminary reports from the FCT Emergency Management Department, FEMD, indicate that the explosion was caused by an open-body trailer powered by CNG,

Our correspondent gathered that the fire, which broke around 7.14 pm on Wednesday, claimed six lives and destroyed over 14 vehicles.

FEMD, in a statement on Thursday, said some of the survivors are currently receiving treatment at the National hospital, Asokoro Hospital, State House clinic, Custom hospital and Nyanya General hospital.

The statement signed by the spokesperson of the department, Nkechi Isa, reads, “Preliminary reports indicate that the incident was caused by an open-body trailer powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

“Some of the victims were taken to the National hospital, Asokoro Hospital, State House clinic, Custom hospital and Nyanya General hospital for treatment.
Firefighters from the FCT FIre Service and Federal Fire Service were on ground to contain the fire.”

Meanwhile, Ag. Director General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, has commiserated with victims and families of those affected by the tragic incident.

He urged all drivers to exercise caution on the roads and obey traffic rules and regulations to prevent similar occurrence.
