Residents of the Federal Capital Territory have been advised to take precautionary measures as thunderstorms are forecast to affect parts of Nigeria in the coming hours.
Recall that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NiMET, had disclosed that active thunderstorms are currently observed over parts of Benue, Enugu, Plateau, and Nasarawa States. The weather alert, valid until May 3, 2025, warns that the storms may extend to the Federal Capital Territory and neighboring states within 1-6 hours.
NiMET further forecasts that other states such as Edo, Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Anambra may also be impacted by the inclement weather. The agency predicts that strong winds may precede the rainfall in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur.
The FCT Emergency Management Department, FEMD, therefore cautioned the public to avoid driving during heavy rains.
FEMD; in a statement by the Head, Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, also advised the disconnection of electrical appliances and urged people to stay clear of tall trees to avoid potential injury from falling branches.
Meanwhile, the Acting Director General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, has placed the agency’s search and rescue team on high alert to respond to any emergencies.
Engr. Mohammed reassured the public of FEMD’s continued commitment to safeguarding life and property during adverse weather conditions.
He further appealed to residents to use the 112 emergency toll-free number in case of any emergency.
