The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has condemned what it described as an unprovoked attack on its operatives in Okhuimwun Community, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement, said the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 20, 2025.
Adejobi said the the officers, members of the Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team, FID-IRT, were traveling from Lagos through Edo State when they were accosted by a mob near the University of Benin axis.
The group reportedly blocked the road and assaulted the officers with stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects, leaving two of them seriously injured.
Despite the assault, the operatives were said to have exercised restraint and refrained from using force. The injured officers are currently receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
While condemning the act, the police warned against mob violence and reiterated that personnel performing lawful duties must not be targets of aggression. The statement added that investigations into the Edo incident have begun, with a view to identifying and prosecuting those responsible.
In a separate development, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered a thorough investigation into a tragic incident in Oyo State involving a police officer and operatives of the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority, OYTMA.
The altercation led to the death of a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade.
The IGP condemned the incident and confirmed that the officer allegedly involved in the shooting has been taken into custody.
He assured that the investigation would be comprehensive and transparent, and that the outcome would be made public in the interest of justice. The IGP also extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the lives and property of all citizens.
It urged the public to remain calm, avoid acts of violence, and channel grievances through legal and peaceful avenues.
