The Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu, has emerged the All Progressives Congress flagbearer for the 2026 AMAC chairmanship election.
Maikalangu polled 51 votes to defeat other aspirants at the party’s primary election held in Abuja.
Chairman of the AMAC APC Electoral Committee, Dr Habib Ibrahim, announced the result and urged all aspirants to accept the outcome in good faith.
Ibrahim called on party members to rally behind Maikalangu ahead of the general election.
Some aspirants were said to have stepped down for Maikalangu before the voting began, signaling growing internal support for his candidacy.
The Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Zephaniah Jisalo, who is also the APC leader in the FCT, congratulated Maikalangu on his victory.
Jisalo appealed to all party members and aspirants to work with the party’s flagbearer to ensure victory at the polls.
Reacting to his victory, Maikalangu thanked the delegates for their trust and support.
“I sincerely appreciate all the delegates who stood by me and believed in my vision for AMAC. This victory is not just mine; it belongs to every member of our great party,” he said.
He also reached out to other aspirants, calling for unity. “I want to appeal to all my co-aspirants to sheath their swords and join hands with me. Together, we can deliver greater dividends of democracy to our people,” Maikalangu said.
He promised to build on his first-term achievements, stressing that his focus remains on development and service delivery.
“I am committed to doing more for our people. With your continued support, we will take AMAC to greater heights,” he added.
Maikalangu, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC earlier this year, is seeking a second term.
Party insiders say his defection was a strategic move to align AMAC with the federal government and attract more development projects.
During his first term, Maikalangu is credited with projects in infrastructure, healthcare, and education across AMAC communities.
With the APC ticket now secured, he is expected to begin wider consultations ahead of the 2026 council elections.
