Nigeria urges U.S. to reconsider new visa reciprocity policy

Nigeria has called on the United States to reconsider its revised visa reciprocity policy, which restricts the validity of non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerian citizens to three months with single entry.

While expressing concern over the implications of the move, the country cited the historically cordial diplomatic and people-to-people ties between both nations.

Recall that the U.S. government recently announced the implementation of the new policy affecting B1/B2, business/tourism, F, student, and J, exchange visitor, visa categories. l

But Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, in a statement issued on Wednesday, described the decision as “misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that should guide bilateral engagements between friendly nations.”

The Nigerian government stated that the restriction places an undue burden on Nigerian travellers, including students seeking academic opportunities, business professionals, families, and individuals participating in cultural and educational exchanges.

While affirming the sovereign right of nations to determine their immigration policies, the Ministry urged the U.S. to review its decision in the spirit of cooperation and shared global responsibilities.

Ebienfa added that diplomatic engagements were ongoing to seek a resolution that reflects fairness and upholds mutual interests.
