Why we removed AMAC Speaker – Jankaro

The Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, Legislative Council has impeached its Speaker, Hon. Matthew Yare, who represents Nyanya Ward.

The impeachment session, held on Monday and presided over by Deputy Speaker Hon. Tony Onoja, ended with the formal announcement of Yare’s removal.

Councillors later elected Hon. Ibrahim Jankaro, representing Kabusa Ward, as the new Speaker.

Explaining the development to journalists shortly after the impeached, Jankaro said the decision was rooted in democratic procedure and the standing orders of the Council.

“What just happened now is the impeachment of the former Speaker of Abuja Municipal Council. And this is the democratic process of any legislative institution.

“In Abuja Municipal Council, the APC councillors are 8 in number, while the PDP are 4. The standing orders of the legislative council say that the minority cannot lead the majority. The minority stands to give constructive agitation and to make sure that they challenge the administration,” he said.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, which holds the majority in the Council, rallied behind the impeachment move, bringing Yare’s tenure to an end. Yare is of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
