The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has sealed two Chinese supermarkets in Jabi and eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market over the sale of unregistered and harmful products.
The agency said the enforcement exercise, which led to the confiscation of goods worth over ₦170 million, followed consumer complaints and surveillance reports.
According to a statement by its Deputy Director of Public Relations, Adegboyega Osiyemi, the operation was carried out on the directive of the Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye.
The supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street, were found selling unregistered food products labelled exclusively in Chinese, in violation of Nigeria’s policy requiring English translations. Despite initial denials, NAFDAC officials confirmed one of the outlets was fully operational with unapproved goods.
Similarly, the cosmetics shops at Wuse Market were shut for selling banned, expired, and unregistered products, including aphrodisiacs, whitening gummies, collagen supplements, and herbal medicines. Some traders were also accused of posing as dermatologists and pharmacists, prescribing harmful products for skin whitening, body enhancement, and sexual performance.
NAFDAC warned that the seized items pose health risks such as kidney damage, memory loss, and skin cancer.
Prof. Adeyeye reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting Nigerians from harmful substances and urged consumers to patronise only NAFDAC-registered products. She also advised foreign nationals and investors to seek proper regulatory approval before marketing products in Nigeria.
