The former National Woman Leader of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Hon. Kayauta Yakubu, has defected to the All Progressives Congress APC.
Yakubu was received into the ruling party on Tuesday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja by the APC National Woman Leader, Dr. Mary Alile-Idele, alongside her supporters and political associates. The APC Chairman for Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Adamu Danladi Ibrahim, was also present.
Speaking on behalf of the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, Alile-Idele described Yakubu’s decision as a move to a “growing and forward-moving” party.
She said the APC remained open to Nigerians who were willing to contribute to national development, adding that the party’s growing membership showed public confidence in its leadership.
Alile-Idele also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for what she described as positive reforms, infrastructure development and empowerment programmes, including the student loan scheme under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
“On behalf of the National Chairman of our party, I am delighted to receive my sister, the former ADC National Woman Leader, into the APC. Our party is not closing its doors. Anyone who wants to join is welcome,” she said.
She added that Yakubu’s entry into the party would strengthen the APC, especially as she came with many supporters.
In her remarks, Yakubu said her decision to leave the ADC was based on her assessment of governance and development under the APC-led administration.
The Kuje-born politician from Rubochi Ward in the Federal Capital Territory said she joined the APC voluntarily to contribute to national growth and grassroots development.
“I decided to join APC because I have seen the progress of the administration, especially in security and development. Nobody persuaded me. I made this decision on my own,” she said.
Yakubu added that she had been part of the APC during the merger but later left, saying her return marked a “homecoming.”
Also speaking, the APC Chairman for Kuje Area Council, Ibrahim, described Yakubu as a founding member of the party with strong mobilisation capacity.
He said her return would boost the party’s chances ahead of the forthcoming Area Council elections.
“We are happy to receive her back. She has the capacity to mobilise people and strengthen the party at the grassroots,” he said.
