U.S. Embassy in Abuja cancels visa appointments over protest fears

The United States Embassy in Abuja on Wednesday cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for the day, citing security concerns and the possibility of protests in the Federal Capital Territory.

In a security advisory issued on Wednesday, the embassy warned that demonstrations linked to the ongoing tensions involving Iran could occur in Abuja, urging American citizens to exercise caution.

According to the mission, all visa interviews slated for March 4 have been suspended, while affected applicants will be contacted with information on how to reschedule their appointments.

The embassy also advised U.S. nationals residing in Abuja to remain indoors and avoid large gatherings, noting that protests in the past had sometimes led to confrontations with security agencies.

It further urged citizens to stay away from areas where demonstrations may occur and to monitor local news for updates on the situation.

The advisory encouraged Americans to remain vigilant in public places such as shopping centres, cinemas and places of worship, while also ensuring that their mobile phones are charged and that they carry valid identification.

They were also advised to be mindful of their surroundings, use alternative travel routes when necessary and familiarise themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings.

Despite the suspension of visa appointments in Abuja, the embassy clarified that its consular services, as well as those of the United States Consulate General in Lagos, remain open.

The embassy urged American citizens who require emergency assistance to reach out through its official contact lines or visit its website for further information.

It also encouraged U.S. nationals to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive security alerts and updates.

The advisory comes amid rising international tensions surrounding the Iran crisis, prompting diplomatic missions in several countries to tighten security measures.
