MultiChoice shuts down Showmax after N4.9bn loss

MultiChoice Group has announced plans to discontinue its streaming platform, Showmax, following heavy financial losses.

The company disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the decision was taken after a comprehensive internal review of the platform’s operations and performance.

According to MultiChoice, Showmax recorded a loss of about R4.9 billion in 2025, making it difficult for the company to sustain the service in an increasingly competitive global streaming market.

Showmax, which operated across several African countries, gained popularity for showcasing African stories and original series such as Wura, Flawsome, and Diiche.
The platform built a strong following among viewers for promoting locally produced content and supporting the growth of Africa’s film and television industry.

However, the company said the shutdown forms part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening its digital services and improving long-term sustainability.

“We’re writing to inform you of an important update regarding Showmax. Following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has taken the decision to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future,” the company stated.
It added that the move reflects its commitment to restructuring its digital operations and adapting to the fast-changing streaming environment globally.

MultiChoice did not immediately disclose the exact date when the service would cease operations.
