Mischief makers behind ‘bandits’ threat letter’ to Abuja communities – Police

Residents of Kungaboku and neighbouring Paze communities in the Federal Capital Territory have been urged to remain calm after the police dismissed as fake a letter allegedly sent by suspected bandits threatening to attack the villages.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command said investigations have shown that the letter, which reportedly circulated through a student of a private school in Kungaboku, did not originate from bandits but from “mischief makers” seeking to create panic.

The alarm had followed media reports claiming that the planned attack was in retaliation for the neutralisation of a bandit commander during a recent security operation led by the FCT Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit in collaboration with personnel of the 7 Guards Battalion of the Guards Brigade.

But the Command, in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the threat was unfounded.

According to the statement, “The FCT Police Command is aware of publications by Vanguard and Daily Trust E-newspapers on the 15th and 16th of March 2026 respectively, alleging that suspected bandits sent a letter through a student of a private school in Kungaboku Community, threatening to attack the village and the neighbouring Paze Community in retaliation for the neutralization of their commander during a recent security operation led by the FCT Police Command Anti-Kidnapping Unit in collaboration with personnel of the 7 Guards Battalion (Guards Brigade).

“Following thorough investigation into the matter, the Command wishes to inform the general public that the said letter originated from mischief makers seeking to spread fear and panic within the community for their mischievous purposes.”

Despite dismissing the threat, the police said additional security personnel have been deployed to the affected communities to reassure residents and prevent any possible attack.

“The Command therefore calls on members of the affected communities and the general public to disregard the letter and remain calm. However, residents are enjoined to remain vigilant and security conscious at all times.

“The Command has also deployed personnel in and around the affected communities to forestall any possible attack and to further reassure residents of their safety and the Command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property across the Federal Capital Territory.”

The police further urged residents to report suspicious movements or activities through the Command’s emergency lines.

“Members of the public are further advised to promptly report any suspicious persons or activities through the Command’s emergency lines: 08032003913, 08061581938.”
