ADC Picks Atiku as Presidential Flagbearer

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

Atiku secured victory at the party’s presidential primary after polling 1,846,370 votes to defeat former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who garnered 504,117 votes, while Mohammed Hayatu-Deen received 177,120 votes.

Announcing the result on Wednesday night, party officials said a total of 2,527,977 votes were cast from the 3,113,599 registered members who participated in the exercise.

Atiku’s emergence is seen as a major boost for the ADC as the party positions itself as a strong opposition platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Political observers say the development could reshape the country’s political landscape, especially as Nigerians continue to express concerns over economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and rising cost of living.

The former vice president, who has contested previous presidential elections, is expected to leverage his political experience, national structure, and support base to strengthen the party’s chances in the coming election.

Meanwhile, the ADC leadership has called for unity among party members following the conclusion of the primary election.

The party urged supporters of other aspirants, including Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen, to work together toward building a stronger platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

With the primary now concluded, attention is expected to shift to coalition-building, grassroots mobilisation, and preparations for the general election campaign.
