The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, underscoring the significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made by citizens in the struggle for democratic governance.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the government described June 12 as a historic date that honours the courage, resilience and commitment of Nigerians who fought for the nation’s democracy.
The statement noted that the legacy of those efforts continues to shape the principles and responsibilities of the Nigerian state, while serving as a reminder of the need to sustain democratic governance.
The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting and strengthening democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance, stressing that the administration remains resolute in upholding those values.
He also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to enhance internal security measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property across the country.
According to him, a secure and stable environment remains critical to the growth of democracy and the achievement of national development objectives.
Tunji-Ojo called on citizens to use the Democracy Day holiday as an opportunity for reflection on their civic responsibilities and to recommit themselves to lawful conduct, active citizenship and national unity.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the Minister stated.
The Federal Government urged Nigerians to celebrate the day peacefully while reflecting on the collective responsibility of building a stronger and more prosperous democratic nation.
