Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday welcomed Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara back to his political fold, saying there was nothing wrong with correcting political mistakes.
Wike, while responding to questions from journalists after inspecting ongoing road projects across the FCT, said he had been informed that Fubara had publicly declared his return, describing the move as the right decision.
“I said during my last media chat that he had no other choice but to return to the same political family that produced him. I have now been informed that he has made that declaration publicly, and we welcome him.
“Our doors are open. Everyone is welcome to join us so we can work together. I can tell you that there is no better alternative. We will all work together to move the state forward, and that is what is most important to me.”
Responding to a question on whether Fubara’s return meant his “sins” had been forgiven after months of political disagreements, the minister dismissed the suggestion, insisting that politics was not about sin but about recognising mistakes and making the right decision.
“I don’t know what you mean by sin. In politics there is no sin. If someone realises they made a mistake and decides to correct it, there is nothing wrong with that. Politics is not a sin. What matters is recognising that you were on the wrong path and making the right decision,” he said.
Wike and his successor, Fubara, had been locked in a bitter political feud since late 2023 over the control of Rivers State’s political structure. The crisis split the state House of Assembly, polarised the Peoples Democratic Party in the state and triggered months of political uncertainty before reconciliation efforts eventually brought both camps together.
About a week ago, Fubara publicly declared his support for the Wike-led Rainbow Coalition, endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid and urged his supporters to join the coalition.
Speaking on Tuesday, Wike said Fubara’s return would strengthen efforts to mobilise support for President Tinubu’s re-election.
“He has publicly stated that he has returned to where he started, and we receive him with an open mind. There is nothing to hide. We will all work together to ensure that we deliver the votes President Tinubu needs for his re-election,” he said.
