The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has begun the public display of the personal particulars of candidates nominated by political parties for the 2027 General Elections across the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.
The Commission said in statement that the exercise is taking place at its FCT headquarters in Abuja and simultaneously at its offices in the six Area Councils.
The move is intended to give members of the public the opportunity to examine the credentials, affidavits and other documents submitted by candidates seeking elective positions, while reinforcing transparency in the electoral process.
Representing the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner during the exercise, the Administrative Secretary, Mrs. Bimbo Oladunjoye, said the publication of candidates’ particulars is a legal obligation under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026.
She explained that the law requires INEC to display the personal particulars and supporting documents of all nominated candidates in the constituencies where they are contesting elections.
Oladunjoye noted that the current exercise covers presidential candidates as well as National Assembly candidates contesting seats in the FCT.
She added that displaying the documents simultaneously across the six Area Council offices is designed to make the information readily accessible to residents and other interested stakeholders.
She described the exercise as a vital component of the electoral process, saying it promotes openness, accountability and public trust in elections.
She therefore urged citizens, political parties, civil society organisations, the media and other stakeholders to carefully scrutinise the displayed documents and participate in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
According to her, the Commission remains fully committed to implementing every stage of its Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Elections in strict compliance with the law.
“The Commission is on course with its preparations for the 2027 General Elections and will continue to carry out every stage of the electoral process in accordance with the Constitution, the Electoral Act, 2026, and the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines,” she said.
INEC reiterated its resolve to conduct elections that are free, fair, credible and transparent, while calling on all stakeholders to continue supporting the Commission’s efforts to deliver a successful 2027 electoral process.
The display of candidates’ personal particulars is a statutory safeguard under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
