African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, says he asked former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, to apologise following their confrontation at the Nigerian Bar Association’s Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt.
Sowore disclosed this during an interview with Arise News on Tuesday while reflecting on the heated exchange between the two politicians during the political session of the conference.
He said his contribution to Nigeria’s return to democracy should be recognised as a form of political experience, arguing that politicians such as Amaechi benefited from the democratic system he helped to fight for.
Sowore also criticised Amaechi’s record in public office, particularly his tenure as Rivers State governor and his time as Minister of Transportation.
The AAC candidate faulted the former minister’s role in transportation policy and maintained his opposition to the removal of fuel subsidy, saying he had warned that the policy would worsen economic hardship.
The disagreement at the NBA conference escalated after Amaechi challenged Sowore’s criticisms and told him to close his mouth while politicians were speaking.
Amaechi had defended his record, citing projects executed during his tenure as governor and as Minister of Transportation.
Despite the confrontation, Sowore maintained that his activism and long-standing advocacy for democracy and good governance gave him sufficient leadership experience to seek the presidency.
He also continued to criticise Amaechi, saying the former governor had not done enough to justify being addressed as “Excellency.”
