NNPC retail unveils smart self-service station in Abuja

NNPC Retail Limited has commissioned its first Smart Self-Service Station in Abuja, introducing a technology-driven facility that combines automated fuelling, electric vehicle charging and other mobility and lifestyle services.

Located on Bill Clinton Drive, the station operates a 24-hour self-service system that enables motorists to independently purchase fuel, select the exact quantity required and make payments at any time of the day or night.

The development is part of NNPC Retail’s efforts to modernise its retail network and respond to changing consumer preferences in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, said in a statement on Thursday.

A subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd, NNPC Retail developed the facility in partnership with the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, which provided the land for the project.

Speaking at the commissioning, NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, described the facility as another milestone in the evolution of NNPC Retail.

“Today marks another important milestone in the evolution of NNPC Retail. The launch of this Smart Station reflects our commitment to innovation, convenience, operational efficiency, and most importantly, an exceptional customer experience,” Dagazau said.

NNPC Retail commended the NIS for its sustained cooperation, describing the partnership as an example of the institutional collaboration required to deliver modern energy infrastructure across the country.

The Managing Director of NNPC Retail, Huub Stokman, said the Smart Station was designed to meet the evolving demands of Nigerian consumers, including the growing preference for convenient payment systems and broader energy solutions.

“More than ever, we need to meet the needs of Nigerian consumers. They want quality products at the right price, prompt and friendly service, more value-added offerings and convenient payment options,” Stokman said.

He added that consumers also wanted loyalty rewards, access to alternative energy solutions such as electric vehicle charging and compressed natural gas, CNG, as well as more sustainable services.

“That is precisely what this Smart Station represents,” he said.

Stokman acknowledged the contributions of the NIS, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Africa Motor Works, technology partners, contractors and other stakeholders to the successful delivery of the project.

He reaffirmed NNPC Retail’s commitment to expanding the Smart Station model nationwide, strengthening partnerships with public and private institutions and developing a customer-focused, technology-enabled retail network.

The Comptroller General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, represented by the Deputy Comptroller General, Finance and Accounts, Saidu Bashir Daura, congratulated NNPC on the commissioning, describing the facility as a model for encouraging investment in sustainable energy infrastructure and innovative transportation solutions.

The station has 16 Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, pumps and two Automotive Gas Oil, AGO, pumps, with storage capacity of 180,000 litres of PMS and 5,000 litres of AGO.

It also has an electric vehicle charging facility with an 86-point capacity, deployed in partnership with Africa Motor Works, alongside an LPG dispensing facility, lubricant service bay and fully automated car wash.

Provision has also been made for the future installation of CNG infrastructure.

Powered entirely by more than 200 kilowatt-hours of installed solar capacity, the facility includes spaces for quick-service restaurants, a coffee shop and convenience store, positioning it as a modern mobility and lifestyle destination rather than a conventional filling station.
