The Federal Capital Territory Administration has completed two new divisional police headquarters in Ushafa and Saburi, with 10 others across the territory now more than 90 percent completed.
The completed facilities, located in Ushafa, Bwari Area Council, and Saburi in Abuja Municipal Area Council, are part of a wider push by the administration to strengthen security and close crime-fighting gaps in the FCT’s satellite and rural communities.
The Director of the FCTA Security Services Department, Adamu Gwary, disclosed this on Wednesday during an inspection of the projects, saying the Ushafa and Saburi facilities were 100 percent completed and ready for official handover.
“Out of the 10 ongoing projects, almost all have achieved more than 90 per cent completion, following Wike’s directive for all contractors to wrap up work before the end of November,” he said.
The projects are among the 12 divisional police headquarters being constructed across the FCT, with two allocated to each of the six area councils.
Gwary said the initiative was designed to eliminate security blind spots and bring police infrastructure closer to residents, particularly those living in fringe communities.
The newly completed headquarters have a central counter, detention facilities and separate cells for male and female suspects on the ground floor.
The upper floor has eight fully furnished administrative offices, including an office for the Divisional Police Officer.
The facilities also include three-storey residential blocks with six fully furnished two-bedroom ensuite flats for police personnel. The apartments have sitting rooms, dining areas, kitchens and stores.
Gwary said the residential component was intended to ensure that adequate personnel remained within the communities and could respond more quickly to security incidents.
He said the projects were part of a broader security intervention initiated by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, after town hall meetings with residents of the six area councils during the height of security challenges in 2023.
According to him, the minister had promised to decentralise security infrastructure and take it beyond the city centre to communities where residents needed a stronger security presence.
Gwary said the Ushafa facility, alongside another police station at Igbu, about 35 kilometres away near the FCT-Nasarawa border, would help secure satellite communities and strengthen the territory’s external borders against cross-border criminality and kidnapping.
He said the administration had also recorded a reduction in reported kidnappings and other serious crimes across the FCT since 2023, attributing the development to improved equipment, expanded security infrastructure and measures targeting internal collaborators.
He warned residents who provide information to kidnappers and other criminal elements that they would face serious consequences.
Gwary cautioned that, “The minister did not mince his words in terms of issuing a stern warning to those informants that they will be treated like kidnappers.”
He urged residents to provide security agencies with timely and accurate information whenever they notice suspicious activities.
Beyond the construction of police facilities, Gwary said the FCTA was increasing its monthly logistical support to security agencies while expanding technology-driven surveillance across the territory.
He disclosed that the Airport-to-Villa corridor was already being monitored through advanced surveillance technology managed from the Force Headquarters control room.
He said the surveillance network would be expanded beyond presidential routes to other high-risk corridors across the territory.
“Aerial surveillance assets are being finalised for deployment to track criminal elements in rugged terrains,” he said.
Before the facilities are formally handed over, Gwary said a technical team from the Federal Capital Development Authority, FCDA, Public Building Department would work with the contractor to verify the projects against the specifications contained in the Bill of Quantities.
The Site Engineer for the Ushafa project, Kabir Muhammed, thanked the minister for entrusting his firm with the project and said the team worked closely with the project monitoring and evaluation teams to deliver the facility within schedule.
