Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has backed Manchester City to retain their titles despite the possibility of sanctions over alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules.
City face potential sanctions, including relegation, after an independent commission found the club guilty of more than 100 charges relating to the period between 2009 and 2018.
There has also been speculation that the club could be stripped of titles won during the period. City have appealed the verdict and deny any wrongdoing.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash between PSG and Manchester City, Enrique said the trophies won on the pitch should remain with the English club.
The Spanish coach also expressed hope that City would avoid sanctions.
Enrique, a close friend and former Barcelona teammate of ex-Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, said the club’s achievements on the field deserved recognition.
Meanwhile, City’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, has made an impressive start, winning all eight of his matches in all competitions.
Enrique, however, played down suggestions that Wednesday’s encounter would establish either team as an early favourite, noting that clubs’ performances could change significantly over the course of the season.
