JAMB bars universities from issuing admission letters

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has warned universities against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that only documents generated through its Central Admissions Processing System, CAPS, are officially recognised for admission into tertiary institutions.

The Board said admissions conducted outside CAPS were illegal and invalid, warning that candidates who rely on admission letters issued independently by institutions could encounter difficulties in securing official recognition, including for mobilisation into the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the warning when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.

Aina said JAMB was the only body statutorily empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking entry into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.

He expressed concern that candidates often assume admission documents are authentic simply because they emanate from institutions offering them admission, even when such documents do not comply with established procedures.

The registrar, therefore, urged universities involved in the practice to desist, stressing that they also had a responsibility to ensure that candidates obtained the appropriate admission documents from the Board.

He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had expressly directed all tertiary institutions to process admissions through CAPS, warning that any procedure outside the approved platform was illegal and invalid.

According to him, universities were not permitted to substitute their own admission letters for the official JAMB documents issued after candidates had accepted their admission offers through CAPS.

Aina added that only admissions processed through the platform would be recognised for official purposes, including NYSC mobilisation, urging institutions and candidates to comply with the established admission procedures.
