The FCT Police Command has arrested two suspected members of a cable vandalism gang and recovered several cut armoured cables following a midnight operation in Guzape, Abuja.
The suspects were arrested after police operatives on surveillance patrol intercepted one of the alleged vandals whose accomplices reportedly fled in two vehicles on sighting the security team.
A statement issued on Monday, by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed that the incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on October 31, when operatives attached to Guzape Division spotted a Lexus SUV and a Toyota Sienna parked under suspicious circumstances along Walter Ofonagoro Street.
According to the police, the occupants took off upon sighting the patrol team, abandoning an accomplice who attempted to escape on foot but was chased and apprehended.
The police identified the first suspect as Sagir Abubakar, of Kuchigoro Village in the FCT.
It said preliminary investigations reportedly linked him to a gang that targets secluded locations across the territory to vandalise public and private infrastructure.
A search of the surrounding premises where the suspects were sighted led to the recovery of several cut armoured cables.
Further investigations subsequently led to the arrest of another suspected gang member, identified as Seidu Umar Bello, who had initially escaped in one of the vehicles.
The command said investigations were ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspects’ activities, identify other members of the alleged gang and apprehend those still at large.
The arrested suspects remain in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Meanwhile, the police urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons and activities to the nearest police station.
