Lawmakers representing the Federal Capital Territory in the National Assembly an accountability and legislative tracking by OrderPaper Nigeria, has turned out zero performance by the three lawmakers.
The FCT is represented in the 10th National Assembly by one senator and two members in the House of Representatives, making a total of three.
Out of a total number of 1,650 bills sponsored in the 10th National Assembly in one year, 3 lawmakers representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, account for 1 bill only.
The bill, which is sponsored by Senator Ireti Kingibe, is focused on education and has progressed to the second reading.
It is titled, “Bill for the Establishment of Federal Capital Territory Nursing and Midwifery school.”
According to a detailed analysis of bills processed between June 2023 and May 2024, the senate introduced a total of 475 bills for which the FCT senator accounts for one.
In the House of Representatives, bills sponsored were 1,175 with the two representatives from the territory accounting for zero.
Sen. Kingibe has been engaged in a war of words with the minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.
The war between the duo seems not to have an end in sight and this might have likely affected her performance and quality representation due to the distraction from legislative duties.
Rep. Obika Chinedu representing Abuja Municipal/Bwari sponsored zero bill, as well as Rep. Ajiya Abdulrahaman representing Abaji/Gwagwalada/Kuje/Kwali also recorded same within the period under review.
Senator Kingibe is currently serving her first term having defeated long term senator, Phillip Aduda in the 2023 elections under the Labour Party, LP.
She is the current chairman, Senate Committee on Women Affairs of the 10th Senate.
Kingibe, one of the only four female Senators elected into the 10th Assembly, has had her membership in four political parties – the Social Democratic Party, SDP (1990 – 1993); All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP (1998 – 2006); Peoples Democratic Party, PDP (2006 – 2014); All Progressives Congress, APC (2014 – 2022) before her eventual win under the Labour Party platform in 2023.
Rep. Ajiya Abdulrahaman is a first-term lawmaker representing Abaji/Gwagwalada/Kuje/Kwali Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congres (APC).
He is the immediate past Chairman of Abaji Area Council.
