The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has called for improved disaster response and proactive coordination.
Speaking during a management retreat held for the agency’s dorectors and operation heads over the weekend, Umar urged participants to intensify efforts in reducing response times to disasters across the country.
She acknowledged existing challenges, including limited resources and the unwillingness of some stakeholders to meet their obligations, but reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to strengthening its leadership strategies for better service delivery.
“We must tackle these challenges head-on and revitalize our responsibilities in proactive disaster management and timely responses to incidents,” Mrs. Umar stated.
Executive Director of the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, Dr. Otive Igbuzor, presented on the need for NEMA to position itself as a model organization for disaster management in Africa.
He emphasized leadership collaboration, increased funding, the use of digital technology, community engagement, and integrating climate change considerations into NEMA’s strategies.
Dr. Umesi Emenike, NEMA’s Director of Human Resources Management, explained that the retreat was designed to equip Directors and Operation Heads with modern leadership skills to enhance their efficiency.
The retreat themed “Catalyzing Institutional Excellence through Strategic Visioning and Performance Optimization,” was aimed at aligning NEMA with global trends in disaster management.
