2025 Budget: Obi demands transparency on N54 trillion allocation

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has called for a detailed breakdown of the N54 trillion “Budget of Restoration” to clarify the sources of increased revenue and ensure transparency in its allocation.

In a statement posted on his social media handle, Obi expressed concern that while the revenue sources had been outlined, there was no corresponding breakdown of expenditures to justify the budget’s expansion.

“Yesterday, I read about the increase in the Budget of Restoration to N54 trillion due to increased revenue. However, while the sources of this revenue have been detailed, there is no transparency regarding how these funds will be spent,” he said.

He emphasized the need for Nigerians to know how public resources—generated from their contributions—are being allocated to guarantee that they are judiciously spent on national development and citizens’ well-being.

The former governor of Anambra State also stressed that expenditures should be directed toward critical sectors such as education, healthcare, security, and poverty alleviation.

Obi also called for an account of the implementation and expenditures of the Renewed Hope budget passed in December 2023. According to him, ensuring proper utilization of past budgets is crucial for national progress and the welfare of Nigerians.

“I urge the National Assembly to seize this opportunity to obtain and make public the full details of the 2024 Renewed Hope budget. Transparency in this regard is crucial for ensuring accountability, learning from past budgets, and making informed decisions for the nation’s progress,” he said.

As discussions on the 2025 budget progress, Obi reiterated the importance of openness and accountability, urging leaders to prioritize the interests of Nigerians.

“As we move toward passing the Budget of Restoration for 2025, let us uphold transparency, accountability, and the welfare of the Nigerian people. We owe this to ourselves, our children, and the future of our great nation,” he said.
