Messi contract awaits ‘final details’ as he sets to make history

An update on Lionel Messi’s contract situation at Inter Miami claims that “final details” are in the process of being thrashed out.

It has been reported for some time that the Argentine GOAT is preparing to commit his future to the Herons. They are understandably keen to get a deal done as Messi looks to make history as the first player to claim back-to-back MVP awards in MLS.

The South American superstar moved to the United States in 2023. The ex-Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain playmaker bid farewell to Europe after rewriting the record books there.

He has continued to do that on a regular basis since making his way to South Florida – with Manchester United and England legend David Beckham helping to put that deal in place.

Messi’s initial terms are due to expire at the end of the 2025 campaign. It is yet to be determined when that will be, with Inter Miami making their way into the playoffs once again.

Their talismanic No.10 heads into the postseason as the Golden Boot winner in MLS. He found the target on 29 occasions during the regular season, while registering a further 19 assists.

He has fallen agonisingly short of matching Carlos Vela’s record of 40 goal contributions in a single campaign, but is still posting some astonishing numbers. A hat-trick in a 5-2 victory over Nashville saw Messi reach the end of the regular season in style.

Javier Mascherano will be eager for his side to avoid any distractions heading into the playoffs, but debate regarding Messi’s future plans will continue to rage for as long as a new contract remains unsigned.

Fabrizio Romano has, however, hinted that a signature on that paperwork is close. The transfer guru has posted on social media: “Leo Messi closes regular season with Inter Miami at 48 G/A and talks over new contract remain at very advanced stages. Messi, expected to stay and sign new deal at the club with final details being sorted…as he’s fully focused on Inter Miami project.”

There has been no official word on how long Messi’s new deal will run for. It was suggested at one stage that he could commit to another two years – taking the evergreen Argentine beyond his 40th birthday. Eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo is still going strong at that age with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.
