WHO names Ursu as new representative to Nigeria

The World Health Organization, WHO, has appointed Pavel Ursu as its new representative to Nigeria, signaling a renewed push to strengthen health partnerships and improve healthcare outcomes across the country.

Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar welcomed Ursu’s appointment, emphasizing the strategic importance of health in national development. “We welcome Ursu to Nigeria and look forward to deepening our collaboration with WHO under his leadership,” he said.

Tuggar noted that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed gaps in Nigeria’s health system, highlighting the urgent need to invest in robust, responsive healthcare infrastructure and local vaccine production.

“Health is not just a sector; it is a foundation for prosperity. A healthy population is empowered to seek opportunity and lift themselves out of poverty,” he added.

He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage, stressing the need for inclusive and affordable healthcare services for all citizens.

According to the minister, the focus on resilient health systems aligns with Nigeria’s broader foreign policy goals, advancing international diplomacy through global health cooperation.

Pavel Ursu praised Nigeria’s leadership in global health initiatives, citing the eradication of wild poliovirus and the integrated immunization campaign that reached more than 106 million children nationwide.

He described Nigeria as home to WHO’s largest country office in Africa, underscoring the country’s central role in shaping regional health development.

Ursu outlined six pillars for WHO’s continued partnership with Nigeria, aimed at driving sustainable investment, innovation, system resilience, and inclusive healthcare. “Nigeria’s strength lies in its people, innovation, and reform-driven mindset.

“WHO will ensure our cooperation leads to measurable public health improvements,” he said. “I am honoured to serve as WHO Representative to Nigeria and look forward to working closely with government, partners, and communities to achieve better health outcomes for all.”
