The Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has praised the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her dedication to the annual First Baby of the Year initiative.
The programme, she said, reflects a strong commitment to maternal and child welfare while inspiring hope at the start of every new year.
The commendation came as Mahmoud joined the First Lady in welcoming the first baby of 2026 at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja.
She extended warm congratulations to the newborn’s parents and family, calling the child’s arrival “a profound symbol of hope, renewal, and fresh beginnings for the FCT and the nation.”
A statement by the SA Media to the Minister, Austine Elemue, explained that the minister described the gesture as a, “compassionate and enduring tradition that reflects the First Lady’s deep concern for maternal and child welfare, as well as her commitment to nurturing hope at the very start of life.”
Mahmoud also highlighted the critical role of healthcare workers in ensuring safe deliveries. “As we usher in 2026, let us recommit to safeguarding mothers and children, supporting families, and fostering a healthier Abuja,” she said, emphasizing that every child deserves the best start in life.
The Minister reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen healthcare through improved facilities, skilled personnel, and broader access to services.
She stressed that the administration, under Barrister Nyesom Wike, will continue to encourage residents to prioritize health and family well-being in building a prosperous future together.
Meanwhile, the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat has begun distributing essential neonatal kits to nursing mothers at primary healthcare centres across the six area councils.
The Mandate Secretary, Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, represented by the Director of Child Development Department, Dr. Idris Yahaya, said the initiative “reflects the First Lady’s deep concern for maternal and child welfare, as well as her commitment to nurturing hope at the very start of life.”
Items distributed include baby wrappers and blankets, baby clothes, disposable or reusable diapers, baby towels, baby soap, baby lotion or petroleum jelly, methylated spirit for cord care, hand sanitizer, among others.
