The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has expressed deep sympathy over the devastating inferno that swept through the Singer Market in Kano, where seven people were declared missing and goods worth an estimated N5 billion destroyed.
The tragedy, which also crippled more than 1,000 businesses, has thrown traders in the market into grief as emergency teams continue recovery and assessment efforts.
In a statement issued by her Special Assistant on Media, Austine Elemue, Mahmoud described the fire as “a heartbreaking and painful setback to hardworking traders whose daily efforts sustain families and contribute significantly to the local economy.”
According to her, “the loss suffered by the victims goes beyond material possessions, touching the very foundation of their hopes and aspirations.”
She extended her condolences to bereaved families and affected shop owners, adding: “I pray for the peaceful repose of the souls of the departed and for strength, comfort, and resilience for all those affected.”
Mahmoud urged emergency agencies and relevant authorities to intensify fire prevention efforts, strengthen safety standards in markets, and expand public awareness to avert similar incidents. She also called for swift relief and rehabilitation support to help victims rebuild their lives.
The Minister reaffirmed her solidarity with the government and people of Kano State, assuring them of her prayers and continued support as recovery and restoration efforts progress.
Authorities had earlier confirmed that the inferno razed large sections of Singer Market, destroying goods valued at over N5 billion, with seven persons initially reported missing in the chaos that followed.
