NEMA cautions Nigerians over fire outbreaks amid heatwave

NEMA cautions NThe National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has cautioned Nigerians over the risk of fire outbreaks and heat-related health challenges following the recent rise in temperature across parts of the country.

The agency said the warning became necessary as many states continue to experience heatwave conditions, which could increase the likelihood of fire incidents and other emergencies.

In a statement on Saturday, NEMA said recent forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) indicated that high temperatures may persist during this period.

The Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, advised Nigerians to exercise caution in the handling and use of materials and appliances that could easily trigger fire outbreaks.

She urged households, business operators and public institutions to pay close attention to the safe use of electrical appliances, gas cylinders and other combustible materials, noting that excessive heat could increase their vulnerability to ignition.

Umar also emphasised the need for proper storage of flammable substances, avoidance of bush burning and regular maintenance of electrical connections to reduce the risk of fire incidents.

The NEMA boss further advised citizens to take preventive measures against heat-related health challenges by staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and paying special attention to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and persons with underlying health conditions.

She also called on residents to remain attentive to weather forecasts and safety advisories issued by relevant authorities while urging communities to promptly report any fire outbreak or emergency to appropriate response agencies.

Umar reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to public awareness and disaster risk reduction in line with the Federal Government’s efforts to protect lives and property.
