Credible elections key to Nigeria’s security- INEC Chairman

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Joash Amupitan, SAN, has stressed that credible elections remain critical to safeguarding Nigeria’s national security and sustaining democratic stability.

Amupitan stated this on Monday while playing host to the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies, AANIS, during a courtesy visit to the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Addressing the Committee, led by its President, Mike Ejiofor, the INEC chairman noted that the visit highlighted the close relationship between effective security management and the integrity of the electoral process.

He stressed that credible elections are fundamental to national peace and stability.

According to him, the theme of the association’s forthcoming second annual lecture, “Credible Election and National Security in Nigeria,” is timely, as it underscores the link between transparent electoral processes and a stable democratic system.

“As Nigeria continues to deepen its democratic process, ensuring credible elections remains a foremost priority. These elections are the bedrock of our democracy, and their integrity directly impacts our national security,” he said.

He stressed the need for closer collaboration among security agencies, policymakers and other stakeholders to guarantee transparency, fairness and adequate security throughout every electoral cycle.

Amupitan commended AANISS for its commitment to strengthening the capacity of security professionals, noting that such efforts are essential in enhancing Nigeria’s ability to counter threats that could undermine democratic development.

The INEC chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections through innovative strategies and stronger partnerships with relevant institutions.

He added that a secure environment remains indispensable for successful elections and Nigeria’s overall progress.

He expressed optimism that the upcoming lecture would generate productive discussions and deepen collaboration between electoral and security institutions in protecting the country’s democracy.
