Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has reiterated its commitment to sustainable urban development and environmentally friendly construction at the Future Cities Summit 2026 organised by the Green Building Council Nigeria in Lagos.
The summit, themed Building the Future: Scaling Sustainability for Greener Cities, brought together stakeholders in the built environment to discuss strategies for promoting sustainable construction and resilient cities.
Speaking during a panel session on low-carbon construction, Julius Berger Regional Manager, Thomas Christl, said the high initial cost of sustainable building remains a major challenge but noted that such projects offer long-term benefits through lower maintenance costs, improved efficiency and reduced energy consumption.
He advocated the use of recycled concrete to cut carbon emissions and reduce reliance on newly manufactured construction materials.
Christl also called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, academic institutions, construction firms and regulators to develop standards that would support the adoption of recycled concrete and other sustainable building materials in Nigeria.

Participants at the summit stressed the need for partnerships among public and private sector stakeholders to address the financial, technical and regulatory challenges associated with low-carbon construction and accelerate the development of greener cities.
