The Federal Government has commissioned a 3MW solar-hybrid power plant at the University of Abuja, a major intervention expected to reduce the institution’s dependence on diesel generators and provide more reliable electricity for more than 40,000 students and 3,500 staff.
Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe, who commissioned the project, said it is designed to strengthen power supply for teaching, research, laboratory services and other critical university operations.
The intervention was delivered under Phase II of the Federal Government’s Energising Education Programme, EEP, by the Rural Electrification Agency, REA, through the Nigeria Electrification Project, NEP, with support from the World Bank.
Tegbe said the project would help reduce the university’s reliance on diesel generators while supporting a more dependable electricity supply for academic and other activities on campus.
He noted that the project represents a significant infrastructure investment at a time when reliable electricity remains essential to the operation of modern tertiary institutions.
On his part, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof, Hakeem Fawehinmi, described the facility as a direct investment in the university’s academic mission and pledged that the institution would ensure its proper maintenance and sustained use.
According to him, the power plant is expected to benefit the university’s more than 40,000 students and 3,500 staff, while improving campus security and creating a more conducive environment for learning and work.
