The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has asked the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, to honour his pledge to withdraw from the presidential race if it is established that he left Anambra State with outstanding debt.
The council’s spokesperson and Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, made the call in a statement on Monday.
Alake cited records released by the Anambra State Government, which said Obi’s administration contracted eight external loans between 2007 and 2013, amounting to about 123.7 million dollars.
The state government said the loans were obtained for projects including malaria control, erosion management, education and healthcare, and that about 92.35 million dollars remained outstanding as of June 2026.
The APC campaign council argued that the figures contradicted Obi’s repeated claim that he left Anambra without a debt burden.
Obi, however, has denied owing any debt when he left office and challenged the Anambra State Government to prove otherwise, saying he would stop his presidential campaign if it could establish that he left outstanding liabilities.
The former governor has also said his administration cleared inherited salary, pension and gratuity arrears and left funds in the state’s accounts.
The debt controversy has since drawn responses from the Anambra State Government and officials who served under Obi, with competing claims over the state’s financial position at the end of his tenure.
The APC campaign council is now demanding that Obi withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, arguing that the records released by the state government have established that his administration left debt liabilities.
