NSCDC officer arrested for firing gunshots at Kubwa market

A Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Onoja Samuel, has been arrested for allegedly firing several gunshots into the air during an altercation with traders at Kubwa Market.
The suspect reportedly went to the market armed with a pistol following allegations that some traders had assaulted his wife.
The incident occurred on Sunday, when the police received a distress call reporting that a man was firing sporadically into the air at the market.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said that operatives attached to Kubwa Police Division were deployed to the scene and subsequently disarmed and arrested the suspect.
Adeh, in the statement added that, “Further findings revealed that the suspect had gone to the market armed with a pistol following reports that some traders had assaulted his wife. During an ensuing argument with the traders, he fired several shots into the air.”
She said the police recovered a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition from the suspect during the arrest, adding that Samuel remained in police custody and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ahmed Sanusi, has urged personnel of sister security agencies to notify the police divisions responsible for their areas of operation before conducting authorised assignments within the territory.
Sanusi said the measure was necessary to ensure proper coordination among security agencies and prevent avoidable clashes.
The police commissioner also urged security operatives to exercise restraint while carrying out their duties, while also advising residents to report emergencies through its dedicated lines.
