WAEC: SS, SE lead in public schools’ performance

·      Public schools’ top enrolment

·      FCT ranks 19th

·      Osun, Zamfara lead from bottom

Public schools in the southern part of the country seem to be doing better in national examinations, as the South-South and South Eastern states dominated the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, Public School Performance Ranking.

The latest WAEC Result Statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, Enugu and Edo topped the chart of states with the best public school’s performance ratio, as Benue state was the only state from the north to appear on the list of top ten states.

FCT performs poorly

The performance of Abuja does not look encouraging as the territory is ranked 19th with candidates’ performance ratio of 77.7percent.

Enugu leads

A look at the statistics on Performance of Public Schools in Nigeria indicates that Enugu state had the highest ratio of candidates with 5 credits and above (including English and Mathematics) in the 2021 WAEC results.

The state has a performance ratio of 93.9percent, and this was closely followed by Edo state with 93.47percent performance ratio.

Benue top in North

Though Benue state came third position with 91.7percent performance ratio, no northern state was ranked among the top ten states in the performance of public schools.

Ebonyi state came 4th position with 91.3 percent performance, followed by Anambra with 91.2percent and Cross River state which had 90.6 percent in public schools’ performance.

Other states with the best performing public schools include Rivers with 88.1percent, Delta with 87.7percent, Bayelsa with 86.4percent and Abia, 86.1percent.

Taraba state came 11th position with 84.02percent in the public school’s performance ranking.

Osun, Zamfara lead from back

Osun and Zamfara states came in the last two positions with only 32.55percent and 9.15percent respectively in public school performance.

Number of candidates up

A total of 1.56 million candidates sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in 2021, indicating an increase of 1.42percent from 1.53 million who sat for the examination in 2020.

Out of this figure, NBS says 721,666 candidates wrote the exams in private schools, indicating an increase of 2.01percent compared to the preceding year, while 838,486 sat in public schools, showing an increase of 0.93percent.

This further indicates that more candidates enrolled for the examination in public schools than in private schools. Analysis by geo-political zone showed that the South-West recorded the highest candidates over the reporting period, followed by the South-South.
