Social Development Secretariat frowns at street begging

The newly appointed Mandate Secretary of the FCT Social Development Secretariat, Hadiza Kabir, has expressed displeasure over the rising number of street beggars and destitute in the territory, saying the trend was unacceptable.

Kabir, who made this known when she visited Karmanjigi, a community that plays host to some physically challenged persons, said the trend was unacceptable especially in the FCT owing to its position as the nation’s capital and the seat of power.

She asked residents of the community to desist from engaging in the shameful acts of begging as the act is condemned in all religions, adding that there’s no basis for them to besiege the streets of the territory begging.

The mandate secretary, while identifying with the inmates following her recent appointment, promise to support the less privileged in the territory through empowerment and skills acquisition programme.

She reaffirmed her commitment to the improvement of their well-being through the Social Welfare Department of the SDS by coming out with programmes and activities geared towards the empowerment and skill acquisition for destitute and the physically challenged in the FCT.

Earlier, the immediate past acting secretary, who is the director of admin and finance of SDS, Dr. Kevin Ike, while handing over to Hadiza Kabir, congratulated the new secretary on her appointment and promised a robust working relationship with her.
