24 Nigerian students stand a chance of full scholarship in this year’s Annual National Mathematics Competition, ANMC, organised by the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges, NTIC.The competition, in collaboration with the National Mathematics Centre, NMC, and Access Bank, will have mathematics-inclined youths in all the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory competing.Speaking at the 20th edition of the competition in Abuja, recently, Managing Director, NTIC, Fevzullah Bilgin, said that for 19 years, the NTIC has been promoting effective teaching and learning of mathematics at the primary and secondary school levels and developing greater capacity through its Annual National Mathematics Competition.“The recently-concluded 19th edition of the ANMC, a yearly competition organised for Mathematics enthusiasts in Primary 5 and 6 as well as JSS 3 by Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC), is an attestation of the college redefining the acts of carrying out CSR, not only in its domain of operations, but also across Nigeria,” Fevzullah said.He added that the award did not come on the platter of gold but as a result of dedication and consistency in its visionary and purposeful education programme.“Over the years, ANMC has only been for Primary 5 and 6 pupils going into JSS1, but this year’s edition is quite exceptional as it comes along with the maiden edition of JSS3 ANMC, he stressed.“This edition of ANMC has about 15,000 students as participants as we have decided to limit their number to COVID-19 protocol. The competition which started in 2003 is now a nationwide prestigious competition that is responsible for sourcing great talents in the subject of Mathematics,” Fevzullah said.He said that after the second round, the top three positions would be awarded a full tuition scholarship at NTIC plus cash prizes ranging from N100,000 to N200,000.The mathematics teachers of such students will also receive cash prizes of up to N100,000, while their schools will also be rewarded with giant-sized photocopiers to desktop computers, printers and smartphones.The coordinator of ANMC, Mr A. Erdal, said that since the competition’s inception in 2003, 195,842 pupils had participated in it across Nigeria and were offered 100 percent scholarship for six years (throughout secondary school) with 186 students currently benefiting from the competition.He added that some of the students that came into NTIC through ANMC had been harnessed and doing remarkably well in their endeavours.
“Notable among them were Henry Aniobi, a 2007 winner. Henry is a three-time Pan African Mathematical Olympiad winner with two gold and 1 silver medal (Côte d’Ivoire, Tunisia, Nigeria) and four times, International Mathematics Olympiad Bronze Medalist.Ayomide Bamidele, a 2008 winner, was a National Physics Olympiad winner in 2014. He also won International Physics Olympiad in 2014 in Kazakhstan, winning a bronze medal.Vincent Anioke, a 2006 winner, scored 239 out of 240 in S.A.T and gained scholarship into MIT for further studies. Many others have all contributed in winning over 360 international Mathematics medals for Nigeria at International Olympiads across the world and most importantly excelling in their careers and academics across the globe,” he said.
