As the alleged presidential ambition of Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and aviation crisis deepen with airline operators planning to down tools, the House of Representatives is expected to reconvene for an emergency plenary on Monday, May 9, 2022 to deliberate on these issues.
The Clerk of the House, Dr Yahaya Danzariya, in statement, weekend, announced that the House will be holding an emergency plenary session by 2pm.
“It is particularly intended to discuss critical issues of national importance. The House regrets any inconvenience this short notice would have caused”, the statement said.
The emergency session is coming almost two weeks before the expected resumption of the House from Sallah break. The House was to resume sitting on Tuesday, May 24.
The Abuja Inquirer learnt that the emergency plenary is as a result of the furor caused by the purchase of the All Progressives Congress, APC, nomination form for the CBN governor by some special interests.
Though Emefiele had given indication that he was yet to decide on the 2023 presidency, calls have been growing for his resignation from the apex bank.
One of those who has called for Emefiele’s resignation is Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, himself a presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP.
Tambuwal made the call on Saturday, in Jalingo, shortly after interacting with the party delegates ahead of PDP presidential primaries.
The governor said that Mr Emefiele’s continued stay in office, after openly identifying himself with a political party, should not be encouraged.
Also, a former Minister of Education and Managing Director at the World Bank, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, called on the CBN governor to resign and stop embarrassing Nigeria.
“I just read your waffling neither-here-nor-there tweet reacting to news of your payment of N100M for the APC Nomination form for 2023 Presidential election,” Mrs Ezekwesili tweeted.
“Seems you did not read what the APC Spokesperson said to @Bloomberg. Resign. Stop embarrassing the country. Stop.”
On the other hand, the Reps will be looking on how to engage airline operators who are to halt operations from Monday over rising cost of aviation fuel.
The operators, last Friday, in a letter addressed to the Minister of Aviation, Sadi Sirika, and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, said they will halt operations from Monday, amidst an astronomical increase in aviation fuel.
