By Laraba MUREY

Weekend was bloody for police personnel in Enugu state as six of them were killed by suspected gunmen, while the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, suffered two fatalities.

The incidents happened at at Orba and Eha-Alumona in Udenu and Nsukka Local Government Areas of Enugu State, respectively.

The first attack was on Friday, May 10, 2024 when the armed men killed two policemen on stop-and-search duty barely a kilometer from Government House, Enugu.

On Saturday, yet another set of policemen and with FRSC officials were attacked at Premier Junction at Eha-Alumona in Nsukka LG and Army checkpoint at Orba in Udenu LG around 4 pm.

The four personnel were killed in the onslaught while others escaped with various degrees of injury.

The hoodlums also attacked and set ablaze a Hilux van belonging to the traditional ruler of Egali Amalla Community in Udenu LG, Patrick Eze, popularly known as Igwe Waziri.

The monarch, who was reportedly caught, in the web of the attack, miraculously escaped unhurt.

The gunmen also burnt an FRSC van during the carnage.

Reacting to the development, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State vowed to apprehend the assailants and placed a N10 million bounty on the killers of two police officers before the Saturday incidents.

He said the government would use every resource at its disposal to bring the killers to book, while fingering the men of the Eastern Security Network, ESN.

โ€œWe just rounded off our Security Council meeting where we discussed, among other things, the gruesome killing of our policemen, men of the Enugu State Police Command, by criminals suspected to be members of the ESN.

โ€œLet me say this: this bestial and cold-blooded action cannot be condoned in Enugu State.

โ€œI have given my directives to the security agencies that there must be no hiding place for these criminals in Enugu State.

โ€œWe must use everything necessary to hunt down, arrest, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

โ€œWe have also placed a bounty of N10 million as a reward to anyone who would have any useful information that will lead to the arrest of these criminals,โ€ he said.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu, was yet to comment on the ugly development when contacted. โ€œI am not aware of the incident. Please contact the Police Public Relations Officer on that.โ€
