Following flood incidences that claimed 44 lives in many communities across the country, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has convened a National Emergency Coordination forum with the aim of reviewing the situation and strengthening partnerships to implement mitigation strategies and timely responses to prevent further losses.
The agency has also warned that the situation could worsen if proactive measures are not taken to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
According to NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, the situation is grim, and therefore the need to act fast to prevent further loss of lives and properties.
Umar revealed that NEMA has intensified efforts to sensitize the public on the need to take precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of the predicted flood disaster.
“We are carrying out awareness campaigns at the local government and community levels, as well as through the print and electronic media, to educate people on the dangers of flooding and the importance of proper waste management.
“The floods have affected 42 Local Government Areas across 18 states, leaving a trail of destruction and devastation in its wake. We urge all stakeholders to join hands with us to mitigate the impact of this disaster,” Umar said.
The NEMA boss also disclosed that the agency has activated its National Emergency Operation Center, EOC, to support and coordinate responses, share information, provide timely support to affected areas, and collate and analyze flood incident data across the country.
“We are committed to ensuring that all necessary support is provided to affected communities. We urge the public to make contributions that will enhance emergency preparedness and response across the country.”
Rear Admiral Umar Faruk from the Nigerian Navy, who represented the Nigerian Military at the meeting, pledged the military’s support to NEMA in the management of disasters in the country.
“We are committed to supporting NEMA in its efforts to mitigate the impact of disasters in the country. We will do everything possible to support affected communities.”
The Head of UN-OCHA in Nigeria, Mr. Trond Jensen, also assured the cooperation and support of the United Nations Systems in Nigeria to work with NEMA in the management of disasters in the country.
