A coalition under the South-South Guardian Forum, SSGF, has protested the delay in confirmation Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Despite the President Ahmed Tinubu’s nomination.
In a statement by the Coordinator of the Forum, Comr. Andrew Odigwe, the group described the delay as unjustifiable and against the principles of due process and national interest.
Odigwe, who addressed journalists during a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt, said the development has raised concerns about possible political interference.
“Engr. Ramat has been screened, vetted, and approved by the Senate. There is no valid reason for withholding his inauguration,” Odigwe said.
He stated that Engr. Ramat’s wealth of experience is needed to stabilize the electricity regulatory framework and support ongoing reforms in the power sector.
“The electricity sector is already experiencing critical challenges. His leadership will bring fresh direction and contribute to service improvement for citizens,” he added.
Odigwe further urged the Senate President to act in line with democratic expectations and national interest.
“We call on the Senate President to prioritize the nation’s interest above any political considerations and inaugurate Engr. Ramat without further delay,” he said.
The group also called on Nigerians to join in demanding immediate compliance to prevent further setbacks in the energy sector.
The Forum listed its demands to include:
*Immediate inauguration of Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as NERC Chairman
*Respect for the Senate confirmation and democratic process .
*Prioritization of national interest over personal or political interests
The group said it will continue peaceful mobilization until the inauguration is carried out.
