Council chairman confirms Bwari explosion

Atleast, one person lost his life in when a device went off at an Islamic school in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

Chairman of the area council, John Gabaya, who confirmed the incident to journalists Monday evening, said three other persons, including a tofu seller, sustained various degrees of injuries from the explosion.

Gabaya, who said he saw one of the dead bodies during a visit to the scene, disclosed that the injured have since been taken to an undisclosed hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.

The explosion, reportedly occurred around noon, has caused widespread panic within the school and the surrounding community.

According to the chairman, the incident occurred at a school which recently began operating in Kuchikuyi community and affected some of the students brought in from Katsina some few days ago by an Islamic scholar commonly referred to as Malams.

“I went on a visit and the Malam said he was the one that brought them and I asked the DPO to immediately take the Malam that brought those students from Katsina so that he could interrogate him.

“But at the scene there, one person died instantly. The three other persons were rushed to the hospital. They were four, according to what the malam said.

There was also this other girl that was selling “awara”, she was selling food to the students when it exploded, it also affected her, ” Gabaya said.

As of press time, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has not issued an official statement, and efforts to contact the spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, have been unsuccessful.
