Labour Party crisis: INEC assures of commitment to rule of law

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to neutrality, transparency, and the rule of law in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.

INEC’s Acting Chairman, Mr. Sam Olumekun, gave the assurance on Wednesday when a high-level delegation of Labour Party, LP, visited the commission’s headquarters in Abuja to submit the Supreme Court’s judgement on its leadership structure.

The commission disclosed on its official X account that Olumekun together with other National Commissioners received the LP delegation as INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, is currently at the Gambia to attend the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions, ECONEC, meeting.

The Labour Party delegation, led by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, said it’s mission to Abuja was to discuss key developments within the party.

During the visit, Otti formally presented a Certified True Copy of the recent Supreme Court judgment concerning the party’s leadership.

He noted that the meeting was aimed at fostering clarity, mutual understanding, and institutional alignment regarding the LP’s current structure.

Both parties engaged in discussions centered on enhancing collaboration and reinforcing democratic values.

Recall that a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, had in a unanimous judgement, sacked the leadership of Julius Abure by nullifying the judgment of the Court of Appeal which recognised him as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.

However, the Abure-led National Working Committee of the party rather hailed the judgment of the Supreme Court, saying it validated the party’s position that political matters were strictly internal affairs, thus deepening the leadership crisis in the party.
