AMAC Lawmakers reverse speaker’s impeachment, give one-month ultimatum

Laraba MUREY

The Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, Legislative Council has withdrawn the impeachment of its Speaker, Hon. Mathew Danjuma Yare, with a warning to amend his ways within one month.

Yare, who represents Nyanya Ward on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was removed on Monday morning by eight councillors of the All Progressives Congress, APC, led by the Deputy Speaker, Tony Onoja. He was immediately replaced with Hon. Jankaro Ibrahim of Kabusa Ward.

However, at a press conference on Tuesday, Ibrahim announced that the impeachment had been set aside following the intervention of key stakeholders, including AMAC Chairman, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu.

He said Yare was accused of failing to hold the council’s plenary sessions twice monthly as required by the chamber’s rules. According to him, the lawmakers decided to give Yare another chance in the interest of peace and harmony.

“We have withdrawn the impeachment of Dr. Hon. Mathew Danjuma Yare on the grounds of stakeholder intervention. But we are issuing a warning that he has one month to amend his ways. If not, the impeachment will be carried out properly in his presence,” Ibrahim stated.

Also speaking, Hon. Matthias Aliyu, councillor representing Wuse Ward, said the decision was taken to avoid a crisis in the council.

He stressed, however, that Yare risked a fresh impeachment if he failed to change his style of leadership.

“We want AMAC to remain peaceful. That is why we listened to our stakeholders. But this is his last chance. If he does not amend his ways, the world will know we acted fairly,” Aliyu said.
