The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Flood Management and Response has praised the National Emergency Management Agency ,NEMA, for its proactive role in disaster management and pledged legislative support to strengthen flood preparedness across the country.
In a statement by NEMA’s Head of Press, Manzo Ezekiel, the committee chairman, Dr. Midala Usman Balami, gave the commendation when members paid a familiarisation visit to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Balami lauded NEMA’s efforts in protecting lives and property, assuring that the National Assembly would look into the agency’s challenges, especially inadequate resources.
He also stressed the need for stronger Local Emergency Committees and better coordination between federal and state structures for quicker disaster response.
Responding, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, briefed the lawmakers on the agency’s mandate, ongoing interventions, and challenges.
She outlined proactive measures being put in place to mitigate floods and other disasters, while stressing that “no community should be left behind in times of crisis.”
The lawmakers later inspected NEMA’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), which collects real-time flood data and coordinates response efforts with other stakeholders.
