INEC: 3.5m Nigerians register online for CVR in 3 weeks

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says 3,544,850 Nigerians have completed online pre-registration in the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise within just three weeks.

The Commission, in a statement by its National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr Sam Olumekun, on Monday said the figure covers registrations as of Sunday, September 7, 2025.

“As at Sunday 7th September 2025, a total of 3,544,850 Nigerians have now pre-registered online in three weeks since the commencement of the exercise on 18th August 2025,” Olumekun said.

Recall that the online exercise began on August 18, while actual physical exercise began on August 25.

Olumekun gave a gender breakdown of the exercise as follows: males 1,709,933, representing 48.24 per cent and 1,834,917 females, representing 51.76 per cent.

The data presentation by age showed that young people dominated the register with 2,291,809, representing 64.65 per cent, aged between 18 and 34 years, while students make up 882,441, representing 24.89 per cent of the registrants.

INEC said it has now begun releasing consolidated figures combining online pre-registration and physical or in-person registration, which started on August 25.

Further data provided by the Commission showed that as of Thursday, September 4, the cumulative figure for completed registrations stood at 288,614, with 132,634 or 45.96 per cent of male population and 155,980 or 54.04 per cent of females.

Again, young people dominate, with 215,414, representing 74.64 per cent aged 18–34, while 114,150, 39.55 per cent are students.

The Commission noted that the detailed breakdown of registrations by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability status has been uploaded to its website and official platforms for public access.

INEC also expressed appreciation for the “positive response of citizens and organisations that have mobilised civic participation for the exercise.”

However, the Commission cautioned against attempts to register ineligible persons.

“Voter registration is only open to citizens who are 18 years or older at the time of registration. It is illegal to encourage underage registration or to register those below 18 in anticipation that they will attain voting age before the 2027 general election,” the statement said.

The CVR continues nationwide in both online and physical modes, ahead of the general election scheduled for early 2027.
