Inter eye Super Eagles’ Bassey in January transfer

Inter Milan are monitoring a potential move for Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, with the Nigeria international attracting growing interest from Serie A during the January transfer window.

Bassey appears on the radar of the Italian club as they continue their search for reinforcements in defence, with the club targeting a left-footed central defender alongside plans to strengthen at right wing back.

“Inter Milan have emerged as admirers of Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, with sources indicating that the Nerazzurri and several other Serie A clubs are keeping a close eye on the Nigeria international during the January transfer window,” TEAMtalk reported.

The report adds that Fulham have no intention of allowing the 26-year-old to leave midway through the season, stressing that he remains central to their defensive plans.

“Fulham sources emphasise that the club have no desire to sanction a mid-season departure, viewing the former Rangers man as a key component of their defensive setup and long-term plans,” TEAMtalk stated.

Inter’s interest is understood to be driven by their search for defensive reinforcements as they juggle domestic and European demands, with the report noting that the Italian giants are seeking added depth during a congested campaign.

“Inter’s interest is understood to stem from their ongoing search for defensive reinforcements, with Christian Chivu’s side aiming to bolster depth amid a tight Scudetto race and Champions League commitments,” the report continued.

Other Italian clubs are also believed to be monitoring the situation, drawn by Bassey’s Premier League experience and international pedigree.

Bassey is currently on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria.

Despite the attention, any move appears unlikely before the end of the season. TEAMtalk reported that “any potential move appears more likely in the summer rather than this month,” with Fulham reluctant to weaken their squad as they push for European qualification.

Bassey’s contract runs until 2027, with the club holding an option to extend by a further year, a position that strengthens their leverage in any negotiations.
