Nigeria set for local production of mosquito nets

The Federal Government has said plans are underway to begin local production of insecticide-treated mosquito nets as part of efforts to tackle malaria in the country.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed this at a malaria elimination meeting in Abuja.

He said the world’s largest manufacturer of mosquito nets was set to establish a plant in Nigeria, making it the first in the country.

Pate noted that over 600 million treated nets had been distributed nationwide in the past 20 years, but none were produced locally. According to him, the new move will save costs, create jobs and strengthen Nigeria’s fight against malaria.

The meeting was organised by the National Malaria Elimination Programme in collaboration with ALMA and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria.
